Modesto City Schools proposes cutting nine campus supervisor positions at its middle and high school campuses as the district phases out programs in light of COVID-19 funds running out.

Superintendent Sara Noguchi said the district engaged in a two-month collaboration with the community, employees and leadership at the school sites to arrive at this decision.

“One reason we were able to settle on this decision — and on this specific number, nine campus supervisors — is because it still leaves us with more campus supervisors than we had before the temporary COVID-related funding became available to school districts,” she said.

This is a proposed adjustment that will need Board of Education approval before the district can announce which schools will be affected.

Campus supervisors help regulate students at middle and high schools. They often enforce the rules and break up disturbances in the hallways and at lunchtime. For example, to prevent the spread of COVID-19 indoors during the pandemic, campus supervisors were used to prevent students from congregating outdoors.

There are 84 campus supervisor positions this year, an increase of 32 since 2020. If the cuts are approved by trustees, the district will have 75 campus supervisors.

“District staff will make every effort possible to identify opportunities for continued employment for those who are displaced by reductions, consistent with employment rights and the terms of collective bargaining unit agreements,“ Noguchi said.

This is one program out of 41, set to be reviewed while the school district decides what to keep, reduce or eliminate. The district is deciding this based on “Guiding Principles & Process for Sunsetting COVID Funds” that will be used as a foundation to assess and select programs for discontinuation.

The Modesto Bee reached out to California School Employee Association but did not hear anything by the time of publication.

The principles are set to be approved by trustees during the school board meeting on Monday, Dec. 11.
