Modesto High School is getting a modern makeover. Here’s how the campus will change
Modesto City Schools has outlined its plan to remodel and renovate its oldest high school, including construction of an athletics stadium.
Presented to district trustees at a special meeting Monday night, the Modesto High School modernization plan is estimated to begin during the 2024-25 school year.
For phase one, the district will build a two-story wing that will house 20 classrooms and an adjacent career technical education wing with three classrooms, Associate Superintendent Tim Zearley said in his presentation. Once the classrooms are built, four buildings along Rosedale Avenue will be demolished. The district estimated the demolition will occur during the 2025-26 school year.
That same school year, the district plans phase two: construction of a two-story, 32-classroom building. Once the building is ready, students who have classes on the north side of campus will shift to the main campus, to ensure no one has to cross Paradise Road to get to class.
During this phase, the district also plans to build new parking stalls for staff, a drop-off and pickup lane in front of the school, and a large shade canopy.
By the 2026-27 school year, once the students have all been moved to the main campus, comes phase three. The old classrooms on the campus’s north side will come down to make room for a new stadium that will have seating for 2,500 and additional parking.
Modesto High’s will be the district’s fourth stadium. Currently, only Gregori, Johansen and Downey have them.
After all the construction is complete, the district estimates 99% of instruction will be on Modesto High School’s main campus, as will the tennis courts and baseball and softball fields.
Modesto High School’s renovation plan is funded through bond measure L, which passed last year. Currently, the district has budgeted $245 million for facility improvements in high schools with $198 million of that funded through the bond measure.
