Modesto City Schools board to weigh support staff changes
The Modesto City Schools board will discuss potential support staff and management layoffs, and changes to the district’s graduation requirements, at its meeting Monday.
Trustees will consider a resolution to end roughly 60 support staff positions, all but 26 of them vacant. The cuts appear to be largely the result of changes in how funding comes to the district. Positions linked to those closed programs are being eliminated, but the affected workers could be reassigned to other jobs.
New job descriptions are also up for a vote, for yard duty supervisors, elementary campus assistants and various clerical positions. It is not clear if any of the new positions would replace those cut.
Also on the line are four management positions: community outreach coordinator; director of student, parent and community support services; purchasing supervisor; and school operations manager. Agenda reports say funding for those positions has been lost.
Unlike recession-linked layoffs, however, the district has had a net increase in its overall budget this year and is not in any financial distress.
The board will have a second reading on changes to graduation requirements tied to changes in Common Core course names. Algebra is included in the integrated math course students will need to complete, instead of a separate algebra course. Students will need to complete three years of math, as before.
The Modesto City Schools board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the district staff development center, 425 Locust St., Modesto. See the agenda here or view past meeting videos.
