Fatal shooting in La Loma neighborhood

A man died early Sunday after authorities found him wounded from gunfire near a school in Modesto’s La Loma neighborhood.

Police detectives are investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting and asking the public to help find whoever is responsible. Officials had not released the victim’s name, age or city of residence.

About 4:30 a.m., dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a man down in the road near Pequeno and Wilson avenues, just north of Wilson Elementary School.

Officers arrived at the scene and found the man had been shot. Authorities performed life-saving measures, but the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Officials said the initial investigation indicates the man was shot in the 200 block of Wilson Avenue following an argument. The victim then ran to the 900 block of Pequeno Avenue, where he was found by emergency personnel. The suspect or suspects involved left the area before officers arrived.

Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
