Man shot during Modesto park robbery
A 29-year-old man was shot in the leg during an attempted robbery at a Modesto park early Thursday morning.
The victim was at Garrison Park on Carver Road at about 1 a.m. when he was approached by a group of about four men, said Modesto Police Sgt. David Chamberlain.
They demanded money from the victim and when he refused one of the suspects shot him in the leg. The suspects fled the area and the victim was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
About 30 minutes later, officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Pembroke Drive, about a mile and a half north of the Park.
A woman there called police to say she believed her husband and son were involved in gang activity and that they had left with a group of people, Chamberlain said. When the group had returned to her home on Pembroke without her husband and son, she called police, concerned about their wherabouts.
Officers went to the home with a witness who positively identified two of the men there as suspects in the robbery.
Daniel Navarrete, 20, was identified as the shooter, Chamberlain said. Navarrete was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery and conspiracy.
Ruben Nieto, 18, was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and conspiracy.
