Woman shot after large fight breaks out near Modesto’s Tuolumne River park

A woman was shot in the leg early Tuesday night after a large fight broke out in a neighborhood just north of Modesto’s Tuolumne River Regional Park.

One person, a 17-year-old boy, is in custody.

Modesto Police Department officers were called to the area of Empire Avenue and Connie Way just south of Yosemite Boulevard on a report of a shooting at about 7:15 p.m.

When they arrived, they found the female shooting victim, who was transported to a nearby hospital. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to Heather Graves, spokesperson for the Modesto Police Department.

Several people fled the scene, including at least one group in a vehicle. One male was seen running south across Hillside Drive and into a field near the park toward the Tuolumne River.

Within minutes, an officer had the teenager at gunpoint near the river. He was taken into custody.

Officers remained on scene searching the area for others involved and possible guns.

We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
