Calaveras County teenager fatally shot in apparent hunting accident

A 14-year-old boy was killed Wednesday after being shot in an apparent hunting accident east of Jackson, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to a news release, authorities responded to an area described as a quarry near the 1100 block of Bald Mountain Road in West Point for a male juvenile who had been shot. The incident was reported at 3:40 p.m.

The victim and another boy, 16, both of West Point, were reportedly bird hunting in the area when the 16-year-old accidentally shot the victim, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The victim sustained injuries to his face and upper body. Fire personnel and paramedics arrived on the scene and transported him to Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas, where he died.

Sheriff’s detectives responded to the scene to investigate the incident.

The 16-year-old was arrested on suspicion of discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner, a felony, and was turned over to the custody of the county Juvenile Probation Department, the news release said.

The investigation is ongoing.
