Pursued driver crashes into TID facility near Hughson

A vehicle pursuit near Hughson came to an end when a driver crashed into the Turlock Irrigation District substation at Geer and Hatch roads Sunday, sheriff’s officials said.

Lt. Marc Nuno of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said the incident began about 5 p.m. with an attempted traffic stop in Hughson. Deputies pursued the vehicle because it appeared the driver was under the influence, Nuno said.

The driver, who lost control of the vehicle near the Geer and Hatch intersection, crashed through the fence and struck a pole inside the high-voltage TID facility. The driver got out and jumped over a barbed-wire fence to run into an adjacent orchard, Nuno said.

Deputies set up a perimeter and captured the individual.

Kenneth James Shipman, 33, was booked in jail on potential charges of reckless driving and evading law officers. The California Highway Patrol is investigating whether he was driving under the influence.
