Prison sentence for botched Modesto home burglary

Superior Court Judge Shawn Bessey on Thursday sentenced a 24-year-old man to 15 years and four months in prison for brandishing a gun during a botched Modesto home burglary.

In October, a jury found Michael Anthony Jones guilty of assault with a firearm and attempted residential burglary with an enhancement for using a gun, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office.

Deputy District Attorney Jessica Bustos prosecuted the case.

The attempted burglary occurred about 2 a.m. Aug. 23, 2013.

Prosecutors said Jones and two others tried to break into the home by prying open a side door with a screwdriver, but they were interrupted by a neighbor. Jones then pointed a .22 caliber revolver at the neighbor before the suspects left the home.

Modesto police found the suspects shortly after.
