Deputy shoots, injures dog after getting bit during family disturbance

A Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputy responding to a family fight shot a dog that attacked him as he tried to intervene.

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in the 1200 block of Picardy Drive, off of Beverly Drive in west Modesto.

According to authorities, the deputy was trying to separate people when a black and white bull mastiff ran up and latched onto his leg.

The deputy shot the dog to get it off his leg. The dog then ran and bit the woman who had called 911, also in the leg, before running into a garage, where it was contained.

Both the deputy and the the woman were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The dog’s owners, who also lives at the property, took it to a veterinarian for treatment. Its condition is unknown but it was walking as the owner led it by its collar from the side yard and loaded it into his car.

After the dog is treated it will be quarantined to check for rabies.

Neighbor Roberta Fernandez said the same dog lunged at her son as he exited a car near the property last month but was stopped short by the chain attached to his collar.

“He just ran so hard to get to my son that he just fell to the ground from jerking his neck so hard,” she said.
