Modesto-area law enforcement to have DUI patrols for Super Bowl

Whether you’re at a bar, restaurant or friend’s house, if you’re drinking during the Super Bowl, you’d better find a driver.

Police in Modesto and Ripon, as well as other agencies, announced this week that they will have DUI saturation patrols out beginning Sunday afternoon and lasting into the late evening and early morning.

The Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos meet Sunday in Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Modesto will deploy patrols beginning at 5 p.m. They’ll be out until 1 a.m. In Ripon, officers with a focus on DUI drivers will be out from 4 to 10 p.m. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department tweeted this week that it also will be deploying roving patrols.

The past three years in Modesto, crashes involving DUI drivers accounted for five deaths, 188 injury crashes and 277 injured people, according to the Modesto Police Department.

Ripon police also are reminding residents that officers will be looking for drug-impaired driving. They cited a study that showed more drivers test positive for drugs, including prescription drugs and marijuana, than alcohol.
