Suspect in Westley homicide arrested

A Grayson man has been arrested in a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday in Westley.

Antonio Cruz, 23, was arrested by Stanislaus County sheriff’s detectives and Special Team Investigating Narcotics and Gangs, or STING, about 5 p.m. Sunday in the 8800 block of Wilson Street in Grayson.

The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. Sunday at La Caverna Bar on the 8800 block of Highway 33 in Westley. The victim was identified as Salinas resident Jorge Santana, 45, who suffered gunshot wounds to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators said.

Detectives still are trying to determine what led to the shooting, according to a news release Monday morning. They said they know there were witnesses at the bar who left prior to deputies’ arrival.

Cruz remained in the Stanislaus County Jail on Monday, held without bail.

Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said no new information was available Monday on a second Stanislaus County shooting on Sunday.

One man was killed and another injured in Patterson about 4 p.m. near Las Palmas Avenue and First Street. The surviving victim was hospitalized in stable condition Sunday, the Sheriff’s Department said. Identities of the men have not been released.
