Boyfriend held in woman’s south Modesto slaying

Police have arrested the boyfriend of a woman who was slain in her south Modesto home Friday afternoon.

Authorities released the names of the victim and the suspect in the homicide, which occurred in the 1500 block of Moselle Court, just south of Hatch Road and west of Crows Landing Road. Modesto police officers responded at 1:30 p.m. to a report of a domestic disturbance at the residence. When they entered the home, they found 19-year-old Andrea Castro unconscious. Medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but were unsuccessful.

During the investigation, officers learned that Castro’s boyfriend, 23-year-old Jose Cuevas-Nery, had left the residence prior to their arrival. Several hours later, Cuevas-Nery was taken into custody in Bakersfield after notifying authorities of his whereabouts. He was transported back to Modesto, where he was booked into the Stanislaus County jail on suspicion of killing Castro.

A motive has not been determined and the cause of death was not released. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the homicide is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and are eligible for a cash reward. Tipsters can text information to Crime Stoppers at 274637; type “TIP704” along with the message.
