A 31-year-old transient was arrested Monday evening after a Sonora resident interrupted a burglary at his home. Desiree Boulanger was booked at the Tuolumne County Jail on a felony residential burglary charge and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for trespassing.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Monday, Sonora police officers responded to the report of an interrupted residential burglary on the 200 block of West Bradford Avenue.

The resident had arrived home to find the door to his home open, police reported. When he walked in, he saw several items strewn about. He then encountered a woman going through belongings in one of his closets. The woman fled the home and jumped a fence, police said. The homeowner called police and pursued the woman, who was on foot.

The resident followed the burglar at a safe distance and stayed on his cell phone to apprise officers of her location, Police Chief Mark Stinson said. Officers confronted Boulanger less than a half mile away, in the area of Save Mart on Stockton Road, where she was taken into custody without incident.
