Modesto man held in Riverbank shooting death

A Modesto man is being held without bail after a shooting death in Riverbank late Tuesday. Guillermo Medina, 22, was booked at Stanislaus County jail on a charge of murder.

Sheriff’s deputies responded about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a person shot in the 2600 block of Topeka Street, east of Callander Avenue/Highway 108.

A 31-year-old man was found lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Medical responders pronounced him dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of family, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The preliminary investigation indicates a possible domestic dispute led to the shooting, but the department is not releasing any information on the relationship between the victim and Medina.

Medina was taken into custody without incident elsewhere in Riverbank, said Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Anthony Bejaran. Investigators are not saying whether the weapon was recovered.

Anyone with information on the homicide is asked to call Detective Jesse Tovar at 209-525-7080. Tips also can be left anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636. Tipsters can also email tips at www.modestopolice.com/crimestoppers, or text them to 274637 by typing “Tip704” plus the message. Tipsters may be eligible for a reward.
