Man shot, killed by Modesto police identified
The man shot and killed by police officers in downtown Modesto on Thursday afternoon has been identified as 24-year-old Christopher Fletcher of Modesto.
Two officers were involved in the shooting on the first floor of the garage at the Merrill Lynch Building at 801 10th St.
About 2:10 p.m. officers attempted to stop the man on the bike and he fled into the garage. When approached by police, the man failed to comply with officers’ orders to drop his gun, department spokeswoman Heather Graves said.
Several shots were fired by both officers. Police and fire personnel performed CPR on Fletcher until he was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he died.
The officers involved were uninjured and have been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure with officer-involved shootings.
Three independent investigations have been launched into the incident, Graves said. The Modesto Police Department is conducting both a criminal and administrative investigation. The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office is conducting independent review of the incident.
The names of the involved officers likely will be released Monday, the department said.
