Modesto father, son face attempted-murder charges in shooting

A Modesto father and son are behind bars, booked Wednesday night on charges of attempted murder. The victim is the ex-boyfriend of the suspects’ daughter/sister.

The crime – a shooting – occurred about 8 p.m., authorities said. Together in a vehicle, David Tabing, 54, and Joshua Tabing, 23, followed the victim to the intersection of 14th and D streets and pulled up next to the driver’s side of his vehicle, where Joshua Tabing fired eight or nine rounds and struck him six or seven times, said Modesto police Lt. Jason Grogan.

The man was struck in the back, legs and a wrist, Grogan said.

“I heard one bullet was resting against his aorta,” he said. “He was very, very lucky. If it had pierced that, he could have bled out.”

Other than the victim being the ex-boyfriend of David Tabing’s daughter and Joshua Tabing’s sister, Grogan said, the nature of the dispute between the men was unclear. He said nothing points to the daughter/sister being involved in the shooting.

The victim was able to tell officers who shot him. About 8:45 p.m., David Tabing was taken into custody at his home in the 900 block of Panoche Drive, just northeast of Morse Road and Kansas Avenue. Officers arrived to see him leaving the home in a car and pulled him over. He was arrested without incident and did not have a weapon on him, Grogan said.

Police kept the house under surveillance and at 10:22 p.m. arrested Joshua Tabing as he tried to return to the home. He told officers where to find the handgun used in the shooting, and it was recovered, Grogan said.

The Tabings remained in custody at Stanislaus County jail Thursday morning, with bail set at $250,000 each.
