Man carjacked in Modesto after ‘meeting’ suspects on Facebook

A meeting set up via social media Wednesday evening turned into a carjacking a little later in northeast Modesto.

According to Heather Graves, spokeswoman for the Modesto Police Department, a man met “some people” on Facebook and agreed to meet them in the 3000 block of Esta Avenue near Kodiak Drive.

The reason for the meeting was not immediately known.

When the man drove up, he was flagged down by two Latino males – one described to be age 15 to 18, the other 18 to 20. The younger man, said police Lt. Jason Grogan, wore a black shirt and was about 5-foot-6, 180 to 200 pounds. The other was about 6 feet tall, 200 to 250 pounds, wearing a white shirt.

They pointed a black semiautomatic handgun on the driver and forced him out of the vehicle, a silver-blue 1990 Acura Legend, Grogan said. The license plate on the vehicle is 4UZB506.

The two thieves, who arrived on foot, fled in the vehicle, which also contained the man’s cellphone.

There was no immediate information on whether the victim suffered injuries.

The case remains under investigation as police try to sort out the details.
