Investigation into shooting near Turlock Sportsman’s Club stalls

The investigation into the shooting of a 15-year-old girl near the Turlock Sportsman’s Club Sunday has hit a snag, authorities said.

On Sunday afternoon, the girl was on a property off Marshall Road, just west of the San Joaquin River, when a bullet hit her in the back. The property is located across the river from the Turlock Sportsmen’s Club.

“It’s still an open investigation,” Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said Wednesday. “There are some difficulties in this case.”

The first problem is that in addition to people at the shooting club, there were others shooting guns down by the river at that time. Deputies heard shots fired.

“We were never able to find them,” Bejaran said.

The second problem is that investigators don’t know what kind of bullet it was, and they can’t examine it.

“The bullet is still in the victim,” Bejaran said. “Without having the round, we won’t be able to send it off for testing to see if they could potentially tell us what kind of gun it came from.”

The victim was hospitalized and underwent surgery. Her condition was not available Wednesday.
