Ripon police offer steering wheel locks
The Ripon Police Department has about a dozen steering wheel locks to give to residents who own one of the most commonly stolen vehicles in San Joaquin County.
“We’ve seen an uptick in car thefts within the city limits in the past couple of months,” Lt. Steve Merchant said Tuesday. The locks remain from an earlier giveaway and “don’t do any good sitting in a box.”
Investigators have identified the nine most stolen vehicles in San Joaquin County as 1989-97 Honda Accords, 1988-2000 Honda Civics, 1987-96 Toyota Camrys, 1990-98 Acura Integras, 1993-98 Saturn SLs, 1992-94 Nissan Sentras, 1989-2001 Chevy pickups, 1987-95 Toyota pickups and 1987-95 Nissan pickup.
The locks are available at the Police Department, 259 N. Wilma , on a first-come basis. The only requirements to get a free lock are to own a vehicle on the list of the most stolen, have the vehicle currently registered and be a city or county resident of the Ripon area.
