Parole denied for Modesto man who stabbed estranged wife

A Modesto man who was convicted of stabbing his estranged wife with a bayonet was denied parole last week, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office.

In 1993, Hector Carrera, 74, was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole. The judge sentenced Carrera to an additional three years for battery on a spouse and one additional year for using a knife in the attack.

Deputy District Attorney Randy Fischer appeared at a Nov. 18 parole hearing and argued for continued confinement based on a psychological assessment that Carrera is a moderate risk for violence.

According to court documents, Carrera attacked his wife after she called police to have him removed from her home. He stabbed her several times in the abdomen. Authorities have said the attack stopped when Carrera’s then 14-year-old son hit his father on the head with a fence post, knocking him unconscious.

Carrera was denied parole in 2008 and 2010, and he will be scheduled for another parole hearing in 2018.
