Modesto woman arrested on suspicion of embezzling from employer

A Modesto woman was arrested Thursday on suspicion of embezzling $300,000 from her Riverbank employer.

In August, Riverbank Police Services Detective Jesse Tovar received a complaint from Monschein Industries, a cabinet and countertop supplier in Riverbank, about employee Lori Gonsalves.

Gonsalves, 35, had been employed by the company since 2000.

Monschein Industries officials had gotten suspicious when cash deposits went missing.

During the investigation, Tovar discovered numerous unauthorized purchases with company credit cards, forged company checks made out to Gonsalves, and a large amount of money that had been missing for several years, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

Tovar believes more than $300,000 was embezzled from the company.

Thursday, detectives and probation officers served a search warrant at Gonsalves’ home in Modesto, where they recovered numerous items allegedly purchased fraudulently with Monschein Industries credit cards, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Gonsalves was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement, grand theft and computer-related crimes.
