Released homicide suspect booked in connection with violent crime in Riverbank

A Riverbank man who was arrested last year on suspicion of murder but never charged was booked in connection with another violent crime on Monday.

Isaac Vaughn, 34, was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail for assault with intent to commit rape stemming from an Aug. 16 incident in Riverbank.

The victim, a 25-year-old woman, was parked on the shoulder in the 3900 block of Patterson Road about 2 a.m. when the suspect opened her car door, said Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Bejaran.

The suspect groped her and tried to forcibly kiss her, he said. The victim fought with him and he punched her in the face several times before fleeing.

A Riverbank Police Services’ detective identified the suspect as Vaughn and on Monday found him near Highway 108 and Topeka Street, where he was arrested, Bejaran said.

Last September, homicide detectives arrested Vaughn on suspicion of murder in the death of 59-year-old Jesus Quintana.

Quintana’s body was found partially clothed in front of a home in the 3700 block of Texas Avenue in Riverbank the previous month. Investigators said he died during a fight with Vaughn.

Vaughn was released several days after his arrest because the District Attorney’s Office did not file charges.

Neither the District Attorney’s Office nor Bejaran would say why charges were not filed in the case. Bejaran said only that the case remains open and under investigation.
