Arrest made in west Modesto homicide; victim identified

Authorities on Friday arrested a Modesto man in the shooting death of another man earlier this week.

Detectives arrested Anthony Centeno, 44, of Modesto, on charges of murder and conspiracy, Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy Anthony Bejaran said.

Also Friday, the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Joseph Carl Levi Wyse of Modesto.

Deputies were called to the 600 block of Marshall Avenue at 12:58 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a shooting, authorities said earlier. The neighborhood is a county pocket located between Modesto High and Mark Twain Junior High schools in west Modesto.

Upon arrival, they found Wyse dead.

It is not clear what sparked the shooting, or who else may have been involved.

Bejaran said detectives have identified another “person of interest” in the case and are looking into that individual.

A neighbor reported that he heard several gunshots the night of the incident. Wyse’s sister said her brother, 29, is survived by 9-month-old daughter.
