Two arrested in weekend shooting in Modesto
Modesto police arrested two people Thursday night on suspicion of shooting a mother and son, killing the mother.
Detectives followed up on several leads after the shooting Sunday and identified 28-year-old Matthew Morales of Ripon and a 16-year-old Modesto boy as the suspects, said Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves.
Daniel Navarrette, 19, was driving with his mother, Jennifer Navarrette, 39, in the area of Pembroke Drive and West Rumble Road when they were shot multiple times. Daniel Navarrette was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released; his mother was pronounced dead at the scene.
A witness described the shooter as a black or Latino man in his 20s who was riding a bike, but detectives later learned through additional witnesses that a truck seen leaving the area is believed to have contained people involved in the shooting. A motive and the events leading up to the homicide are still under investigation, Graves said.
The 16-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was interviewed by detectives at the Modesto Police Department on Thursday and subsequently arrested. Morales was arrested in Ripon.
Both were booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
