Turlock police, CHP pursue stolen car to Manteca

A Tracy man was arrested Thursday afternoon on suspicion of leading police on a pursuit in a stolen car.

Turlock police and the Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force set up a perimeter around the Home Depot in the 2800 block of Countryside Drive after receiving a call that there was a stolen car from Stockton in the parking lot.

The caller described the driver and told dispatchers that he had gone inside the Home Depot, Turlock police Officer Mayra Lewis said.

Officers saw a man come from the store carrying stolen merchandise, which he loaded into the car, Lewis said. The man began driving out of the parking lot, then saw the officers.

As the suspect fled, two officers did evasive maneuvers to avoid being hit by the vehicle, Lewis said.

Turlock police pursued the car through town until it got onto Highway 99, at which point the California Highway Patrol took over.

The pursuit ended in Manteca when the driver lost control of the car, which rolled near the offramp at Highway 120 and Union Road.

The driver, 36 year-old Louie Daniel Romero Sr., was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of stolen property, auto theft and felony evading.
