Oakdale man taken into custody after chase, standoff in Ripon
An Oakdale man wanted on felony charges of domestic violence was arrested after a foot chase and standoff in Ripon on Tuesday.
About 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Ripon police got a report of a suspicious person in a vehicle on the 500 block of Ripona Avenue.
Upon locating the vehicle, officers ran a check on it and learned that a suspect associated with it, Austin James Hensley, was wanted by Oakdale police.
Officers approached Hensley, who ran away, according to a news release from the Ripon Police Department. Officer Richard Francis chased Hensley, who at one point hid on the roof of a residence. As additional Ripon officers arrived, Hensley ran across Ripona Avenue.
Lt. Steve Merchant chased him into an alleyway between Ripona and Ridge avenues as officers, including a K-9, set up a perimeter and began a search of the area.
Officers came upon a duplex in the 600 block of Ripona Avenue that appeared to have been broken into by the suspect. A number of attempts were made to have Hensley come out peacefully but he refused to comply, police said.
The Manteca-Ripon SWAT team was called in because there were indications Hensley had armed himself. Officers heard the suspect kicking out a wall in the shared attic of the duplex.
After more than three hours, Hensley, 27, emerged from the adjoining duplex and was taken into custody without incident. He was released on a citation for the Ripon charges and was turned over to the Oakdale Police Department.
Hensley remained in custody at the Stanislaus County jail Wednesday morning on charges of corporal injury on an intimate partner, false imprisonment and enhancements for offenses while out on bail. Bail has been set at $150,000.
