Oakdale man arrested after allegedly trying to meet minor for sex in Patterson
An Oakdale man was arrested last week after allegedly arranging to meet a person he believed was a minor from Patterson for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity, according to Patterson Police Services.
Phillip Abraham Daniel Capeder, 32, was arrested Thursday, July 9, following an investigation by Patterson Police Services detectives and the agency’s community resource deputy, police said in a social media post Friday.
According to police, Capeder arranged to meet with an individual he believed was a minor from Patterson for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity. When he arrived at the predetermined meeting location, he was taken into custody by deputies and detectives without incident.
Authorities have not said whether the investigation involved an undercover operation, what age Capeder believed the minor to be or how investigators first made contact with him.
According to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office jail roster, Capeder was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on suspicion of five felony offenses:
- Attempted lewd or lascivious act with a child younger than 14
- Sending or distributing harmful matter to seduce a minor
- Contacting or communicating with a minor with intent to commit a specified sexual offense
- Arranging to meet a minor for the purpose of committing a lewd act
- Attempted unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor more than three years younger than the defendant.
The jail roster lists Capeder’s bail at $700,000. As of Monday morning, he remained in custody.
A criminal complaint had not yet been filed in Stanislaus County Superior Court as of Monday morning. A court clerk told The Bee that felony complaints stemming from recent arrests are typically not filed until the defendant’s initial court appearance.
The Bee contacted the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office seeking additional information about the investigation, including what led to the arrest and the circumstances surrounding the alleged communications, but had not received a response by publication.
In announcing the arrest, Patterson Police Services reminded parents and guardians to remain vigilant about their children’s online activity and to report suspicious or inappropriate contact to law enforcement immediately.
