Stanislaus County deputies investigating shooting death in south Modesto

Homicide investigation

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting Sunday afternoon in south Modesto that left a man dead.

At about 3:30 p.m., deputies responded to the area of River and Bystrum roads for a reported assault involving weapons. They found a man on the ground, suffering at least one gunshot wound, according to a news release Monday afternoon.

A passerby had discovered the victim and began CPR. Emergency responders took over lifesaving efforts, but the man died at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit is conducting the investigation and has not identified a suspect, the news release said.

The identity of the man killed is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
