Sonora man arrested after Amazon cyber tip prompts child sexual abuse investigation
A Sonora man was arrested last month on suspicion of possessing child sexual abuse material after the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office said it received a cyber tip that led investigators to his residence.
According to a Sheriff’s Office social media post, investigators began looking into the case in February after receiving a tip from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Authorities said the report originated from Amazon’s online data storage service.
Detectives identified Roger Gary Andrews of Sonora as the owner of the account connected to the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.
On May 28, investigators executed a search warrant at Andrews’ home, where they seized numerous electronic devices that are being processed and analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities said Andrews was at the residence and arrested on suspicion of possessing child sexual abuse material.
The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active and detectives continue to follow leads.
After initially publishing the post, the agency issued a clarification stating that Andrews was not accused of purchasing child sexual abuse material from Amazon. Instead, officials said the case involved Amazon’s online cloud storage service, where the reported material was stored.
