A Modesto man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of being a felon in possession of firearms.

Anthony Welch, 27, was in possession of a Glock 26 handgun on Feb. 1 and a Glock 23 Gen4 .40 caliber handgun on June 2, according to a press release sent Thursday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“Welch is prohibited from possessing firearms because of a prior felony conviction of assault with a deadly weapon with a firearm,” the release said.

The investigation was conducted by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. If convicted, Welch faces a maximum of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, the release said.

The case is part of Operation Take Back America, which aims to “repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime,” according to the release.
