Two juveniles on electric dirt bikes, who evaded officers and ran through stop signs, were arrested following a pursuit Saturday in Ceres.

A Ceres patrol officer watched the two dirt bike riders travel into oncoming traffic in the vicinity of Mitchell and Service roads, according to a Ceres Police Department post on social media. The officer tried to pull over both riders for multiple traffic violations, but they evaded apprehension.

The post said the juveniles continued through the area, running stop signs and driving on pedestrian paths. The officer lost sight of the dirt bikes but spotted them again as additional officers responded. The two juveniles refused to stop for officers, the post said.

According to the post, a coordinated effort by officers managed to take them into custody. Learning they were minors, police released the pair to their parents, and the electric dirt bikes were impounded. Felony charges are pending.

Ceres police said the dirt bikes are legally considered off-road vehicles. They are not permitted on roadways.

The post said riders and parents should “familiarize themselves with laws regarding electric bicycles and electric dirt bikes. Unlawful operation can result in impoundment, criminal charges for riders, potential criminal liability for parents and serious injuries.”
