Update: Police investigating shooting in east Modesto

A teenager suffered wounds to his face and shoulder in Modesto on Wednesday night when he was shot while sitting in a car talking with friends.

The shooting occurred about 9:15 p.m. on the 1900 block of Tradewinds Court, just southwest of the intersection of Oakdale Road and Celeste Drive.

Dispatchers received a call that a man was taking himself to Memorial Medical Center with a possible gunshot wound, Lt. Jason Grogan of the Modesto Police Department said Wednesday night. Officers met the victim at the hospital.

The victim, age 17, was wounded when a bullet went into his left cheek and out through the bottom of his jaw, Lt. Brandon Gillespie said Thursday morning. The teen also had a bullet wound in his shoulder, Gillespie said, but it was not immediately clear whether that was from a separate gunshot or a change in trajectory from the facial shot. There were at least two shots fired.

According to the incident report, the victim was sitting in the car while talking with friends who live on Tradewinds. It was not clear where in the vehicle the boy was sitting and whether his friends were inside or outside the vehicle.

The shooter, described as a Latino boy age 15 to 18, fired into the back of the vehicle after getting out of a silver sedan, Gillespie said. The shooter was a passenger in the sedan, he said, and there was no description of the driver.

Police were at the scene talking to witnesses and gathering evidence late Wednesday night.
