Coulterville attempted-murder suspect dies by suicide during Modesto traffic stop
A man wanted in connection with an attempted murder in Mariposa County died Monday morning after shooting himself during a traffic stop in Modesto, according to authorities.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said deputies located 56-year-old Keith Capron around 8:30 a.m. Monday near McHenry and Union avenues in Modesto. Capron had an active attempted-murder warrant issued by the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Stanislaus County authorities, as deputies conducted a traffic stop on Union Avenue, Capron suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Mariposa County authorities later said Capron shot himself as Stanislaus County deputies attempted to contact him.
“Medical aid was immediately rendered and Capron was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased from self-inflicted injuries,” the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post Monday afternoon.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.
Earlier Monday, Mariposa County authorities said Capron was wanted in connection with an attempted murder that occurred Sunday night in the Coulterville area.
Authorities said Capron shot a victim twice in the head with a handgun before fleeing the scene in a stolen blue 2008 Toyota Yaris. The Sheriff’s Office said he was believed to still be armed with the handgun used in the shooting.
The condition of the victim has not been released as of early Monday afternoon.
Following the shooting, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office issued a “Be on the lookout” alert to neighboring law enforcement agencies, according to the department.
Traffic in the area of Union Avenue between McHenry Avenue and Cougar Place was impacted Monday morning while deputies investigated. By early Monday afternoon, the scene had been cleared.
Authorities said no additional information would be released Monday as the investigation remains ongoing.
