Stanislaus Sheriff’s Office investigating Knights Ferry human remains as homicide

Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office

Human remains were found along Highway 108/120 west of Knights Ferry last week, and the case is being investigated as a homicide, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office reported.

A news release Thursday says deputies and investigators with the Major Crimes Unit responded a week earlier, April 30, to the discovery of possible human remains. “The circumstances surrounding the incident are suspicious, and it is being investigated as a homicide,” the release says.

The next day, Friday, May 1, the Sheriff’s Office posted in the 1 p.m. hour that its investigation was impacting traffic on the highway. Caltrans was on scene to mitigate traffic conditions, and drivers were urged to avoid the area.

The news release did not say why disclosing the nature of the investigation took a week. It says, “We appreciate the public’s continued patience and understanding as this case continues to develop. Detectives are working diligently to ensure the investigation is handled thoroughly; however, due to the complexity of the case, no further details are available at this time.”

Asked if the Sheriff’s Office could reveal any information about the remains, such as whether they are of a male, female, adult, or juvenile, a spokesperson said, “We do not have any details on the remains yet.”

Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact Detective Perez at 209-525-7093 or submit an anonymous tip through Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 866-60-CRIME or stancrimetips.org.
