2 arrested during Modesto hospital protest of ICE shooting in Patterson
Two people were arrested Tuesday night during a protest outside Doctors Medical Center in Modesto after allegedly vandalizing a roadway, police said. The gathering was in opposition to the shooting by ICE on Tuesday morning of a Patterson man, who was taken to DMC for treatment.
Modesto Police Department officers were monitoring the largely peaceful demonstration along Florida Avenue in front of the hospital, according to the department.
Shortly before 10 p.m., two participants used white paint to write “ICE out” on the roadway, police said. Both were arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism.
Police identified the individuals as Bernadette Gamez, 36, of Modesto and Wendy Villagran, 22, of Stockton.
The protest came hours after Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez was shot during an encounter with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents earlier Tuesday in Patterson.
Modesto Public Works crews were notified and are working to remove the vandalism, police said.
Despite calls on social media for supporters to gather outside the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center, no demonstrators were visible at the jail Wednesday morning.
