South Modesto shooting leaves man dead, woman injured

A man died and a woman was wounded during a Friday night shooting in south Modesto, authorities said.

Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department deputies were called about 9:45 p.m. to an area near Lassen Avenue and Dallas Street on a report of a fight in the street.

An initial 911 call referred to several people fighting, and a second call reported the shooting.

Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said deputies found a 24-year-old man dead in the street. A 58-year-old woman also had been shot. She was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.

Bejaran said he did not know what started the fight and could not comment on the man's and woman's involvement in the dispute.

He said deputies are awaiting positive identification on the man.

No suspects are in custody. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators collected evidence throughout the night. Detectives need to interview witnesses and are not releasing other details at this time, Bejaran said.
