The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office will set up another checkpoint for impaired drivers Saturday, March 14. The exact time and location were not disclosed.

Deputies will stop motorists, looking for signs of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. That can include prescriptions and cannabis that are legal at other times.

This and other checkpoints are funded by the California Cannabis Tax Fund, the office said in a news release Thursday.

“Having a sober driver is just the first step in keeping the night safe,” it said. “The Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to continue using their seat belts, putting away their cell phones, following the rules of the road, and keeping an eye out for dangerous drivers.”

The office added that DUI offenders could face jail time, suspended licenses, higher insurance premiums and other penalties.

The release urges drinkers to have a designated driver or use a ride-hail service or transit. Anyone who suspects an impaired motorist should call 911.

DUI checkpoints can foil other crimes. In Riverbank last Halloween, sheriff’s deputies reported finding two illegal firearms in a vehicle.
