Turlock mother faces murder charges after toddler is found unresponsive in pool
A Turlock woman faces charges of murder and other crimes after police officers found her 2-year-old daughter unresponsive in a home swimming pool Friday afternoon.
Officers immediately began CPR, according to a news release Saturday from the Turlock Police Department. But despite lifesaving efforts by officers, fire personnel and medical staff, Daniellé Pires later was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The 911 call reporting a child found unresponsive in a swimming pool came in shortly before 3:30 p.m. Friday. The incident was on the 4500 block of Fireside Drive.
Investigating detectives determined that the child’s mother, 40-year-old Kelle Brassart, was responsible for the child’s care at the time of the incident, the news release says. “Detectives also found evidence suggesting that alcohol and/or drugs may have been contributing factors,” it reads. “Additionally, Brassart has had multiple prior contacts and referrals with Child Protective Services in other counties.”
Brassart was the person who called 911 and was the only adult present with her daughter at the time of the incident, Police Department spokeswoman Dominique Sanchez told The Bee. She appeared to be under the influence, Sanchez said, and told officers that because she uses a wheelchair, she was unable to get her daughter out of the pool.
There is fencing around the in-ground pool, Sanchez said, but “there was a hole in it that a child could easily fit through.”
Brassart was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on suspicion of murder and child neglect resulting in death.
“This is incredibly tragic,” said Chief Jason Hedden in the news release. “Our hearts go out to the family, friends and first responders who were impacted by this devastating loss.”
