Two separate carjackings occurred in Stanislaus County within 24 hours
Stanislaus County law enforcement agents responded to two separate carjacking incidents within 24 hours — one on Monday morning and one on Tuesday morning.
There is no indication that the events are related.
Deputies responded to a report of a physical altercation at 575 E St. in Waterford around 10:50 a.m. Monday, which subsequently escalated into a carjacking, according to a Facebook post from Waterford Police Services.
Two suspects were identified — 33-year-old Joseph Conley of Modesto and 24-year-old Aliya Diaz-Chauvin of Waterford. They arranged to meet the 48-year-old victim under the pretense of resolving a property dispute involving cell phones, according to police.
After arriving at the scene in a Honda Civic, Conley punched the male victim in the face and attempted to stab him with a knife while making verbal threats.
Conley then stole the victim’s red Dodge Ram and fled the scene while Diaz-Chauvin drove away in the Honda. They were gone by the time deputies arrived.
A description of the suspects and vehicles was immediately shared with the California Highway Patrol and other local law enforcement agencies, according to Waterford police. Around five minutes after sharing the descriptions, deputies located the stolen vehicle traveling southbound on Hickman Road.
When a traffic stop was attempted, Conley failed to yield, leading to a pursuit that reached speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Deputies successfully ended the pursuit using a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver. Conley attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended and taken into custody, according to police.
He was booked at the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on multiple felony charges, including conspiracy to commit a crime, assault with a deadly weapon, carjacking, battery and violation of probation.
Around 11:20 a.m., the Honda driven by Diaz-Chauvin was located and she was taken into custody without incident. She was booked for conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of methamphetamine, and was also found to have multiple outstanding warrants for drug related offenses.
The victim sustained moderate facial injuries during the altercation and received medical attention at the scene.
