The Turlock Police Department has released more details regarding the discovery of handguns found at a middle school Monday morning, one of which was “accidentally” discharged.

Around 10:30 a.m., a Turlock Unified School District maintenance worker discovered a pile consisting of two blankets and a jacket on the Dutcher Middle School Campus, TPD said. The items were found in a maintenance area where electrical equipment is housed, near a fence line and close to a neighboring apartment complex.

While clearing the space, a firearm within the pile discharged. This area is not accessible to students and no one was injured, according to police.

After the incident was reported, officers arrived at the campus to secure the area and begin an investigation.

Two handguns and a jacket were collected and booked into evidence.

Police said it is unclear how long the guns had been in the maintenance area on campus or how they ended up there. Surveillance footage is being reviewed and staff members are working to determine a timeline.

A Turlock Police officer remained on campus for the rest of the school day.

“We understand how concerning this situation is for parents, students and staff,” Turlock PD said in a news release. “Please know that we are working closely with the Turlock Unified School District and remain committed to ensuring the safety of our school campuses.”

Those with information that may assist with this investigation can contact the Turlock Police Department at 209-668-1200 or report anonymously through the StopIt app.
