A gunman remained at large Thursday in the shooting of a man in west Modesto late Wednesday afternoon.

Police officers were called to the 900 block of Middlecoff Avenue on a report that a man had been shot outside a home. When they arrived, they found it was the home of the victim, who was transported to a nearby hospital with wounds that were not life-threatening.

Authorities described the shooter as a black man in his 20s wearing a white shirt, camouflage pants and a red hat. He fled the scene on foot, Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Heather Graves said Thursday.

Police officers and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department deputies set up a perimeter Wednesday near Pelton and Middlecoff avenues east to Roselawn Avenue. They went door to door for about an hour searching for the shooter but came up empty.

The motive for the shooting remained under investigation Thursday.
