One killed, three injured in crash during Stanislaus County pursuit

Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office

A 40-year-old man was killed when a Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office pursuit ended in a collision Monday afternoon.

Three other people were injured and taken to local hospitals.

The pursuit began when deputies tried to pull over a man wanted on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence and dissuading a witness. The driver fled, according to Sheriff’s Office release.

When the man’s vehicle approached Crows Landing Road and Seventh Street, just south of the Seventh Street bridge, it collided with another vehicle. The collision happened at about 3:30 p.m..

When deputies approached the vehicles, they found their suspect unresponsive. They attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

The others’ injuries were listed as “non-life-threatening.” The other car was occupied by a man, a woman and a boy. Two were transported by ground ambulance, one was taken by a helicopter.

As of Tuesday morning, the identity of the man who was killed had not been released. Typically, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office does not release the identity of someone who’s died until next-of-kin is notified.

Sgt. Erich Layton said the process of internal investigation in a case like this is different than if someone is killed by a deputy with a gun or other use of force.

A pursuit is typically examined by a sergeant who determines if it should be passed up the chain for further review. Layton said he did not know where that process was at as of Tuesday morning.

The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation of the collision itself.
