California Highway Patrol

A driver quickly was arrested Saturday night after a hit-and-run crash on South Ninth Street in south Modesto, the California Highway Patrol reported.

At about 9:10 p.m., CHP units responded to reports of a pedestrian dead in the roadway of South Ninth north of Hatch Road, according to a news release. There were “obvious signs of death,” it says.

Officers saw the suspected driver — identified as 22-year-old Jasneal Singh Hayer of Modesto — leaving the scene by getting onto southbound Highway 99. They pulled over the vehicle and determined it had struck the pedestrian.

Hayer was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.

Southbound Highway 99 was closed to traffic during the investigation, the release says.

No identifying information on the victim was immediately Sunday.
