59 year-old Modesto man arrested in murder of 18 year-old victim in Turlock

A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a fatal shooting early Tuesday in Turlock.

Dispatchers received a call that a man was shot on the 1800 block of Lander Avenue. Officers responded and found 18-year-old Jose Tamayo-Morales suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts, he died at the scene.

Turlock police determined that the shooting was the result of an altercation between the victim and the suspect. Using license plate reader technology and with assistance from Modesto and Ceres police, TPD arrested 59-year-old Troy Cannon of Modesto. Cannon was charged with murder and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center.

“With the aid of license plate reader technology, our detectives were able to swiftly gather critical information and locate the suspect,” said Turlock Police Chief Jason Hedden. “This case serves as a powerful reminder of how technology is reshaping law enforcement, helping us protect the public and resolve cases more quickly.”

The Turlock Police Department asks that anyone with information call Detective Giovacchini at 209-668-6539, or the TPD tip line at 209-668-5550, ext. 6780, or email tpdtipline@turlock.ca.us.
