Update: Beyer High evacuated as police, deputies investigate bomb threat. What was found

4:50 p.m. update: A suspicious bag located after a bomb scare at Beyer High School on Thursday afternoon was determined to be a gym bag holding football gear, Modesto police reported.

“We are continuing our investigation into the initial claims of a possible bomb and will be clearing the area shortly,” Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said by text.

Original story: Just three days into the new school year, Beyer High students were evacuated Thursday afternoon because of a bomb threat, Modesto police report.

Police received word a little after 1:30 p.m. Sgt. Pat Kimes said school officials released students early because the school day was only about an hour from being over.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was on scene to address the threat, he said. All students and staff are safe, police reported. Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear told The Bee at about 3:50 p.m. that the bomb squad had the package in question.

Modesto City Schools spokeswoman Sharokina Shams told The Bee that a student flagged down an administrator to report witnessing a student make the threat. There was no immediate word on whether anyone was identified or detained as a suspect.

“Out of an abundance of caution, students have been safely evacuated ...,” according to a statement from Bear. “Parents have been notified directly by the school and have been given instructions for early student pickup.

“A student pickup area has been established on the west side of the student parking lot for parents wishing to pick up their children. This location is accessible via Sylvan Avenue. Please follow the school’s guidance closely.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as information is available.
