Man killed in late-night, DUI-related crash near Ceres identified as Modesto resident
A man on a mobility scooter killed by a suspected impaired driver near Ceres was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office on Thursday as a Modesto resident.
The collision occurred around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday on Service road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Daniel Garcia, 41, was riding the scooter in the eastbound lane, east of Esmar Road, when he was hit from behind by a Toyota.
The driver of the Toyota, 20-year-old Kayla Espinoza of Ceres, was traveling at about 65 mph and did not take evasive action, according to the CHP.
The area was dark and Garcia had no lighting equipment. He died at the scene.
Espinoza was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
The collision remains under investigation.
