Modesto Bee file

A man was killed and a suspect arrested in a shooting Friday night in the parking lot of a strip mall on Coffee Road, according to Modesto police.

Officers were dispatched to a report of a person shooting a firearm in the parking lot of 1501 Coffee, near Coolidge Avenue, just before 9 p.m., according to Sgt. Kalani Souza. Radio traffic indicated the shooting was just outside a Mexican food restaurant.

Officers found a man in his 20s sitting inside of a vehicle, suffering from at least one gunshot wound, Souza said. First responders performed life-saving measures, but he ultimately was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives quickly identified the suspect as 27-year-old Lance Reyes of Modesto.

Members of the department’s Street Gang Unit located Reyes and took him into custody without incident. Detectives would not release details about where, how or when the suspect was located.

Reyes was booked into the Stanislaus County jail on suspicion of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held without bail.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact Det. Ra Pouv at 209-572-9826.
