A Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy has been placed on administrative leave following a domestic violence arrest in Roseville over the weekend, the Sheriff’s Department and Roseville police reported.

Deputy Chad Kewen Lewis, a Turlock resident and seven-year veteran of the department, was arrested Saturday related to a domestic violence incident. The 27-year-old was booked into the Placer County Jail on preliminary charges including inflicting corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, and mayhem.

The California Penal Code says mayhem is when a person “unlawfully and maliciously deprives a human being of a member of his body, or disables, disfigures, or renders it useless, or cuts or disables the tongue, or puts out an eye, or slits the nose, ear, or lip.”

“Upon learning of the arrest, Deputy Lewis was immediately placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation,” Sheriff Jeff Dirkse said in a news release. “Roseville Police Department is handling the criminal investigation, and per policy, we will have no further statement regarding the internal investigation,” the sheriff went on to add.

A spokesman for Roseville police said that at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, the department got a call reporting a domestic dispute at a hotel in the 1300 block of East Roseville Parkway. When officers arrived on scene, they found a victim who had been assaulted and had noticeable injuries. The victim was taken to an area hospital.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” the spokesman said, “and because this case involves a confidential victim and may be associated with domestic violence, no other details can be shared.”

In an unrelated matter, Lewis is among nine deputies, as well as Dirkse and the county, being sued for the fatal shooting of Eloy Mares Gonzalez Jr. in 2020. Lewis and Deputy Brandon Silva were the shooters but other deputies contributed to escalating the situation, according to the lawsuit.
