Modesto police said a suspected drunk driver triggered a fatal four-vehicle crash Friday night in Ceres.

About 10:15 p.m., Modesto-area fire and police were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle collision at East Whitmore Avenue and Morgan Road. Emergency crews arrived and determined there were multiple injuries from the crash.

Modesto police Lt. Mike Hammond said a vehicle was traveling toward the intersection and failed to stop for a line of cars waiting at a red light. The vehicle rear-ended one car, which sent both vehicles into two other stopped vehicles at the intersection.

Hammond said a woman in one of the vehicles was killed. Three other adults also were injured, he said, and taken to local hospitals. Two of the injuries were life-threatening, according to a report from the Modesto Fire Department. An 18-month-old infant was also in one of the vehicles, but was uninjured, Hammond said.

A 25-year-old man, who was allegedly driving the vehicle that caused the chain reaction, was arrested on scene on suspicion of drunk driving. He is facing charges of manslaughter and DUI. The identity of the suspect was not available, Hammond said, and no more information was released on the other injured parties.

Assisting on the scene were Turlock City Engine 34, Modesto Fire Engine 6, Engine 1 and Battalion Chief 1. Modesto fire said the crash was declared a mass casualty incident and Modesto police continue to investigate.
